Dangriga demonstration

Friday, August 29, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: The Dangriga branch of the National Garifuna Council today staged a peaceful demonstration that that southern municipality.
Dangriga residents came out in numbers carrying placards and voicing their dissatisfaction with the decision by the local branch of First Caribbean International Bank to prohibit the speaking of Garifuna by bank employees and customers doing business at the financial institution.
President of the NCG-Dangriga Martha Robinson told reporters that the demonstration which started from in front of the Drums of Our Fathers Monument and proceeded to in front of the First Caribbean International Bank office, was to send a message loud and clear to the bank executives.
“This is a Garifuna community,” Robinson said, “it is our right to speak our language wherever we go.”
Furthermore, Robinson says that nothing short of a public apology from the branch manager of First Caribbean International Bank in Dangriga is expected “because this is not right.”
President of the National Garifuna Council Superintendent of police Robert Mariano was also present at today’s demonstration and he said that the Garinagu are dissatisfied with the policy which prohibits the speaking of Garifuna by employees and residents who go to the bank to conduct business.
