Tuesday, September 9, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: The issue of discrimination against the Garifuna people recently exploded on center stage following allegations that a First Caribbean International Bank manager prohibited the use of the Garifuna language in the Dangriga branch of the bank.
It is an issue that Mayor of Dangriga Town Gilbert Swazo says they are taking seriously, intending to work together to address the way forward against discrimination.
It is a human rights issue in the view of organizations that are working together. But when we pressed Swazo as to whether the troubles of the Town Councils in Dangriga and P.G. at present are due to ethnic discrimination, he was not prepared to go that far.
Instead, he reiterated the readiness of concerned citizens to stand up against such discrimination, from any source.
He attacked the Prime Minister as being petty and personal and determined to win elections by any means necessary.
The coalition against discrimination, he insisted, crosses political lines.
