Friday, September 12, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Between 10:00 Thursday night and 3:00 a.m. this morning, the sole link to destinations north of Belize City was cut off, but it was a needed gesture.
The Haulover Bridge at Mile 5 on the Philip Goldson Highway was closed by the Ministry of Works and Transport for immediate and urgent repairs to key support structures for the bridge.
The actual repairs were conducted between 10:00 p.m. and midnight and the bridge is back to full use as of this morning.
Chief Engineer Lennox Bradley says supports under the concrete slabs on the deck of the bridge were giving way and needed to be welded back in place, but he assures that the bridge is otherwise structurally sound.
Works are soon expected to start on a replacement bridge as part of the Government’s investment in expanding the highway between Belize City and Ladyville to four lanes.
