Fish Festival planned for holiday weekend in October

Thursday, September 25, 2014. JUAN CAAL Reporting: The Toledo Institute for Development of Environment is holding their Annual TIDE Fish Festival in Punta Gorda town.

The Fish Festival started in 2002 as a one day event featuring a fishing tournament, games and activities related to the Port Honduras Marine Reserve.

It has since blossomed into a full-blown 3 days of activities highlighting Toledo’s Culture and Natural Resources including 3 areas TIDE co-manages, Port Honduras Marine Reserve, Paynes Creek National Park and TIDE’s Private Protected Lands.

This year the event will be held from October 20 to October 12 and organizers say they are catering to thousands of attendees, both from Toledo and other districts.

Seafood Gala

The Fish Festival kicks off on Friday, October 10 with a semi-formal fundraising event in a cocktail setting that offers a variety of fresh seafood delicacies, sustainably harvested from the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and complemented  by  the live performance of the Panerifix Steel Orchestra.

Door Prizes range from overnight accommodation at hotels throughout Belize to family photo shoots. One of the main highlights of this event will be the recognition of TIDE’s conservation achievements since its inception.

Activities on Saturday October 11 include a bicycle race on the Southern Highway from the TIDE Compound to Mafredi village and back under the sponsorship of the Weekend Warriors Cycling Club.

The Youth Conservation Competition takes center state on Saturday night, October 11 under the theme: “The value of Protected Areas in Belize.”

It will feature creative stage presentations by high school and Junior College students with attractive prizes up for grabs.

Then on Sunday, October 12, the grand finale will be held at the TIDE compound with the Fish Festival starting with the morning fishing tournament.

Other activities include a volleyball tournament, bicycle race, coconut husking competition, greasy police and cast net throwing competition.

Cultural presentations as well as local food and beverages, arts and craft will be on sale throughout the day.

All are invited to Punta Gorda town this October 10 to October 12 for the TIDE Fish Festival.
