Tuesday, September 30, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Gang rivalry is alleged to be behind an incident that occurred around 10:40 Friday night in La Democracia Village.

Police say 21 year old Joshua Martinez had just exited a Shaw’s Bus going west at the junction of the George Price Highway and Coastal Road around 10:40 p.m. on September 26 when three men approached.

As he and his sixteen year old sister were sheltering under the bus shed from the rain, their attackers fired six shots at them, catching Martinez on the right arm and left upper back.

Adolphus Palacio was charged with attempted murder, dangerous harm, use of deadly means of harm and professing to belong to a criminal gang, specifically the George Street Gang, on Monday and was remanded until November 11.

There was one non-fatal shooting incident in Belize City this weekend. 30 year old Joseph Debride was targeted at his house on Currasow Street.

The Lucky Strike, Belize District native was shot in the right side of the neck, right upper back and in the right leg by a single armed attacker who attacked from behind as Debride opened the door of his house.

Debride continues to recover and police investigations led to the arrest of a 17 year old minor from Lakeview Street.

A Chinese couple was the latest target of robbers this weekend. Marlboro Shop on Freetown Road was hit around 12:45 in the afternoon of September 28, after its proprietor was held up by three armed men who entered the shop from the back door.

After one of the culprits hit the proprietor on the head with his handgun, the frightened couple gave up $500 from the cash drawer, a US$1,000 gold chain; a Toshiba laptop valued at $2,000; a Samsung cell phone valued at $800; a Nokia cell phone valued at $200 and a white I-Pod valued at $1,200 for a total value of $6,700.

Police continue their investigations, but press officer Raphael Martinez says businesses can help themselves by dedicating resources to obtaining surveillance cameras and other security equipment.

Police have confirmed that one of their own was in a traffic accident this weekend.

Police Constable Dejohn Cayetano ran into trouble early in the morning of September 27 when at the corner of Douglas Jones and North Front Streets he was knocked off his motorcycle, suffering head and body injuries.

Police continue their investigations, but apparently Cayetano’s brothers in the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) are being accused of visiting the man they suspected of being behind the incident and dishing out their own style of justice.

Mechanic Allan McKoy, who passed the scene in his vehicle on his way home, says he was stopped and taken back to the scene of the crime and severely beaten up by a cadre of GSU officers.

Later he attempted to appeal to head of the unit Inspector Mark Flowers to clear him by checking the video at MJ’s Nightclub, but the pleas fell on deaf ears as the Inspector flatly told him he was the man they were looking for.

McKoy has since formally complained to the Professional Standards Branch and the Ombudsman.
