Wednesday, October 1, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: As part of activities for Coastal Zone Awareness Week, a panel discussion was held among stakeholders at the offices of the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI).
Presentations came from all sectors, from planning developers to business operators to environmentalists. Part of the problem with establishing and promoting eco-friendly products, according to proprietor of Eco-Friendly Solutions Luis Garcia, is that habits are slow to change.
He gives an example: though environmental organizations are preaching use of biodegradable and eco-friendly material, they continue to allow usage of more damaging products such as Styrofoam containers because they cost less.
That attitude has to change if Belize is to properly develop and conserve its resources, in the process saving the coastal zone from damage and ugly-looking scenes of garbage on the seas. Coastal
Awareness Week continues through Friday.
