Wednesday, October 1, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Today is the International Day of Older Persons.
All this week activities are planned as part of local celebrations of Older Persons Week under the theme, “Leaving No Person Behind-Promoting A Society for All.”
Organizers hope the theme will nod the younger population to begin thinking about the ageing process. But for those already in their twilight years, today was a day for pampering.
At the Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly and Helpage Activity Center, older men and women were getting massages, manicures, pedicures and all manner of beautification.
Helpage Belize’s executive director, Ivorine Bulwer, tells us that beyond beauty, the day serves a purpose for the non-governmental organization.
The beauty treatments are also a sort of health check-up, allowing tests for the strength of nails and limbs.
The organization is also taking the opportunity to sign up new members and promote its many services, including visits to shut-in and sick elderly persons and provision of health, financial and other services.
We spoke to one of the lucky recipients, former Miss YWCA 1995-1996 Leotine Lewis.
Now 89 years young, she encourages all older persons and Belizeans generally to become active in organizations such as Helpage in order that the younger generation especially learn the benefit of age and wisdom from those who came before them.
Activities continue in all districts and conclude with a special parade on Friday in Belize City.
