Tuesday, October 7, 2014.  JUAN CAAL Reporting: Maya Leaders from 38 Maya communities in southern Belize have taken part in a cultural outreach seeking that they call spiritual support from the ancestors.

A three-day pilgrimage of the participating Maya leaders culminated with a sacred offering at the great temple of Tikal.

On Monday morning, the bus full of the Maya leaders made its way to great temple of Tikal where they made their offering to the great jaguar, Kinich Ahau.

According to representatives of the Maya Leaders Alliance, the offering was to request spiritual guidance and support for the current struggles of the Maya people in claiming for traditional Maya lands that is yet before the Courts as they eagerly await judgement, which they hope will be fair for both sides.

During the sacred ceremony, the Maya leaders also asked for strength, knowledge and wisdom so that all obstacles on the way forward will be overcome with the help of God and the strengths of Maya ancestors.

The sacred ceremony which was an all day activity, concluded in Jalacte village where Maya leaders were received by the melody of the traditional marimba.

The Maya leaders went on to say that the struggle will continue for the Mayas as their ancestors did, noting that recently there was a recent meeting involving Maya Leaders and the Prime Minister in Belmopan.  That meeting bore hopes of additional dialoguing on matters that affect the Maya communities in fundamental ways.

Says the MLA representative: “our feet get tired but the next step must be taken. Our eye lids get tired and close on their own, but we must keep seeing the pathway ahead. Our brain gets tired but we must think and find from its dept power to fuel our thoughts and ideas. Many times our heart gets heavy from carrying the burden of endless criticisms and opposition both from within and from the outside. Do we have it all wrong? Would it not be easy to merely exist with no purpose and just fit it? It takes us back to the basic principles – the physical body and strength must be guided by the spiritual element. As the Maya people embark on the bold step of transforming their rights to reality, venturing into uncharted territories in contemporary times, we are obligated to return to our ancestors to ask that they walk with us on the pathway into the future! Our endless thanks to the spiritual guides and Elders from Jalacte and San Marcos and the Alcaldes of the other villages that participated.”
