Thursday, October 16, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: A group of educators from the United States are nearing completion of their yearly visit to Belize as part of the Belize Education Project.
The initiative began in 2007 when a group of educators from Colorado first came to Belize on a medical outreach.
One of the visitors recognized the need to help out in education and so the idea of Belize Education project began.
Jean Krusner is one of the founders of the initiative and currently serves as the president and team leader of the group of 33 educators currently working with schools in the Cayo district.
Three schools under the management of the Seventh Day Adventist church and one government school are involved in the Belize Education Project which involves helping children learn how to read and write, involves parents in literacy programs and assists teachers in their professional development.
According to Krusner, her organization also provides scholarships for deserving children to attend High Schools and helps primary school students to be able to complete their elementary education.
Under the Belize Education Project a group of about ten Belizean teachers travel to Colorado, USA each year in the month of April as part of a teacher exchange program.
Then in October, members of the Belize Education Project group from the USA come to Belize to facilitate training locally and to interact with the children at the target schools.
Krusner says that response to the initiative has been “unbelievable” so far and she is right proud of the teachers at the different schools who have been taking part in the exchange.
“The passion, the enthusiasm and the commitment that each one of the teachers that we work with has for the kids, is just inspiring for all of us,” says Krusner.
Krusner explains that members of the visiting team are highly qualified teachers and professors, many of them with Doctorates in Education or Masters in Education.
