Friday, October 24, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: Tributes continue to come in for Belizean cultural icon Paul Nabor who died on Wednesday evening in Punta Gorda town.

The National Garifuna Council, in a statement, said it joined the rest of Belize in noting “the transition of Mr. Paul Nabor.”

The NGC statement credits Nabor with representing “the Garifuna People across the globe and used his positive messages through music to empower nations.”

It notes that Belize “has lost a Parandero, spiritual leader, and committed healer.”

The Christian Workers Union in a statement mourning the passing of the legendary Parandero, said that “like his many fans both here in Belize and abroad, we regard him as more than just a celebrated Master of Garifuna Culture, especially the Paranda genre.”

The CWU statement says that the death of Paul Nabor “leaves a great void.  He was an admirable role model worthy of emulation and not just among his fellow Garinagu.”

The Belize Tourism Board in a statement said that “we join the rest of the country to recognize and celebrate Nabor’s achievements and contributions to Belize’s music industry.”

Paul Nabor was the recipient of the Order of Distinction and Meritorious Service Awards bestowed on him by the government of Belize.

He has also received international awards and acclaim for his contribution to Paranda music.

Nabor, who is originally from Barranco village, Toledo, was also active in his community serving as Buyei. The BTB statement ends by saying that “Punta Gorda has lost one of its sons. Belize has lost one of its greats.”

Funeral arrangements for Paul Nabor have not yet been finalized.
