Monday, October 27, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: The General Manager of Quality Poultry Products Raymond Barkman, this afternoon responded to queries from Belize Media Group regarding an incident at the company’s production facility in Spanish Lookout, which has left an employee dead.
Sabino Primentel, a resident of Santa Familia Village and the manager of the boiler system at the rendering plant for Quality Poultry Product, received severe burns on the morning of Thursday, October 16, when there was an explosion and he was doused with boiling water.
A statement issued by Barkman via email gave a chronology of the tragic events which led to the incident around 11 am on Thursday, October 14 and noted that “sadly it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Barkman explain in his statement to Belize Media Group that “the top cover of the boiler blew open; safety checks are done regularly and there was no indication that anything needed to be changed.”
He further explained that “the accident took place on the second floor and at the time there was not supposed to have been anyone on that level as the boiler had already been filled. It is really sad because we don’t know why Sabino was up there and worse at the particular time when it exploded.”
The Quality Poultry executive told Belize Media Group that the company took an immediate decision to get medical treatment for Primentel at a burn victim facility in Guatemala City and arranged air ambulance to that facility by 4 pm on October 16.
Doctors, according to Barkman’s statement, were hoping that if Primentel could make it past the first three days of treatment, he would be okay.
“Sadly that is not the case,” said Barkman in his statement, “and he succumbed to his injuries exactly one week later in Guatemala.”
Primentel is described by his employer as a “leader and dedicated worker” who, even after he was abdly burned, was concerned about the same piece of equipment that malfunctioned and caused hin to be doused with hot water.
“This shows his level of dedication and love of the job,” said Barkman in his statement.
He ended the lengthy statement by expressing “our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Sabino and his work family at Quality Poultry Products.”
