Wednesday, October 29, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) has new leadership, with Dr. Adrian Coye replacing Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth as chief executive officer.

Before his moving up Dr. Coye was Chief of Medical Services and on Tuesday, the hospital unveiled his replacement, Dr. Lisa Johnson. Dr. Johnson is Belize’s first female general surgeon and the first staff manager of the KHMH in its 19-year history.

She is an alumna of All Saints Primary School, St. Catherine Academy, Belize Technical College and the University of the West Indies (UWI) and interned in the Bahamas before receiving a general surgery qualification in Jamaica.

She served in Jamaica as a consultant general surgeon at St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital and in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on a clinical fellowship with the University of Toronto from 2012-13, in addition to a stint at Belize Healthcare Partners Limited from 2003 to 2007.

Dr. Johnson discussed an important aspect of patient care which she hopes to improve as she joins the KHMH.

According to Dr. Johnson, it is important that staff are aware of the needs of patients and their families and endeavor to treat them well, despite the seeming lack of “bedside manner” in some medical professionals.

The KHMH must provide an experience for its unfortunate visitors that will make their stay more comfortable and ultimately successful.

Dr. Johnson says she will supervise a new education campaign to target Belizeans on the specific services of the hospital, including those which have gone unnoticed and unmentioned.

She says it is important that Belizeans understand that with their cooperation we can reach the standards of international hospitals in North America and the Caribbean, which have some of the same issues we do with patient care and staff development.

The hospital’s public relations unit plans a sitdown with Dr. Coye in short order to discuss his appointment as CEO.
