Wednesday, November 12, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Today is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, and to build awareness with future users of the technology, the leading firm in GIS application and technology in Belize, Total Business Solutions Limited, hosted a GIS Information Expo for upper primary and secondary school institutions at the Ramada Princess Hotel.
According to organizer and general manager of TBSL Loretta Palacio, GIS applications have become commonplace in our lives and often in fact make our lives much easier. She says that it answers questions for politicians and governments, businesses and ordinary people that involve plotting and mapping and generally access to technology.
One of the participants in today’s expo is journalist Adele Ramos, who says training to use GIS has helped her develop a connection between journalism and technology that makes her stories more relevant to read. Ramos, an assistant editor at Amandala, makes use of topical maps such as her plotting of homicides in Belize City and dengue cases. Overlaid with each other, there is an emergent pattern of depressed areas of the Southside being afflicted with both a health and national security emergency.
Also participating were the National Met Service, BTL, BEL and other private users of GIS technology.
