Thursday, November 13, 2014. JUAN CAAL Reporting: Plans are being finalized for the staging of the annual Battle of the Drums extravaganza this weekend in Punta Gorda town.
The Sport Auditorium in Punta Gorda town will be pulsating with the beating of the Garifuna drums on Saturday night as groups from Belize, Honduras and Guatemala will battle it out for top honors.
According to organizers, the Battle of the Drums this year will feature five different types of Garifuna music, such as Punta, Paranda, Hugu Hugu – sometimes spelled “hungu hungu” – Chumba and Wanaragua.
Each group will be judged based on coordination, transition, ability to excite the audience , creativity and style.
This year, groups taking part in the event will be from Labuga-Guatemala, San Pedro Sula-Honduras , Belize City, Sein Bight, Hopkins, Dangriga and Punta Gorda town.
This year promises to be an exciting event with the spirit of pride in Garifuna culture.
Everyone is invited to Punta Gorda this weekend for the Battle of the Drums, which is part of activities leading up to Garifuna Settlement Day.
