According to contest organizer and Sagicor Belize executive Abel Simpson, the program is aimed at promoting the development of the STEM disciplines-sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics – in schools.

Each school was asked to present and outline an ongoing problem at their school and surrounding community which could be solved with use of STEM and design a project, including collected data, which showed that idea in action.

Each proposal must show how the solution contributes to making Caribbean communities more sustainable.

We spoke to a few of the participants, including Belmopan Comprehensive School whose students want to locate fruit trees in their classrooms to both clear the air and offer healthy food alternatives; St Catherine academy of Belize city, battling mosquitoes at their seaside compound, and San Pedro High School, where students are proposing a sanitary landfill on campus to do their part in alleviating Ambergris Caye’s sanitation disposal problems.

Winners will be announced later today and the top three will be given cash prizes and science kits for their schools. The overall winner competes in a regional competition.
