Wednesday, December 3, 2014. ORANGE WALK BUREAU Reporting: Negotiations have been resumed as it pertains to the current impasse between Belize Sugar Industries/ASR and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association.
Today, all 18 branch chairmen and directors from BSI converged at the Staff Club where 3 points were laid on the table.
Both parties hashed out these points in which they were not in full agreement, including that of the cane ownership, payment for bagasse and an interim agreement.
And while nothing has ben finalized, concerns were raised by both parties about the importance of timely starting the Sugar Cane Crop Season.
A tentative start date of December 8 has been proposed but nothing has been finalized.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega have come back into the picture to help mediate towards a positive resolution.
In the meantime, both parties will go back and discuss the proposals, then decide to meet later with their respective recommendations.
On Tuesday, BSI issued a brief press release announcing that it had completed its annual repairs and is now ready to commence milling once a date is agreed upon by all parties.
No date has been set for another round of discussions but the entities explained that they are both conscious of time constraints and so they will seek to accelerate the process.
