Wednesday, December 10, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Today is International Human Rights Day and there were activities held around the country.
Helpage Belize is marking the occasion with a renewed call for government to challenge the wide range of human rights and violations experienced everyday by many older women and men.
In Belize City at the Helpage Activity Center and Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly, multiple generations came together at a Christmas party which also doubled as a celebration of human rights for all, including older persons.
Chairman of Helpage Belize, Evan Dakers, says that the day was about recognizing the rights of all, including older persons, to fair treatment and a role in society
The organization’s activities director, Marisha Zetina, said that today’s activity allowed both the residents of the Sister Cecilia Home and Helpage’s members to interact with the younger generation and enjoy themselves in the type of atmosphere that rarely occurs.
On our arrival we caught up with 77 year old William Flores, originally from Barranco, Toledo District.
He was leading the audience of young and old in lively renditions of Christmas and other songs.
He may not look like it, but Flores is blind.
He told us that will not stop him from singing or living his life, taking exercise and passing the twilight years of his life the best way he knew how.
Human Rights Day was celebrated under the theme “Human Rights 365”.
