Friday, December 19, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Media content provider Bel-Caribe Communications today found another way to make Belize City residents lives sunny, just in time for Christmas.
Staff members were in action all over Belize City’s Southside, handing out thousands of dollars in groceries and toys, even ham and turkey, to neediest families pre-selected but not told of their good fortune.
Bel-Caribe’s general manager, Sandra Mahler, told us that seeing the joy on their faces, brings joy to her heart.
She explained that the initiative, started eight years ago, saw staff members go out and interview recommended families, with a group of three making the final selections.
The staff also accepted recommendations from the Belize Cancer Society and the National AIDS Commission.
Mother of nine Michelle Young lives on Neal Pen Road, while mother of seven Sandy Smith lives further down into the undeveloped extension.
As each watched her children tear into their toys she heaped quiet praise on the Secret Santas that brought her these unexpected gifts.
The joy was doubled for the family of Coreen Bonilla and Elroy Thomas from the “Gungulung” area, who along with their hamper and toys received a brand new sofa set donated by Puma Energy.
The other families assisted today are those of Sherilee Padilla, Gisela Cayetano and John Lobo, all of Antelope Street Extension; Karefa Dixon of Mopan Street; Andrea Bowen of Sarstoon Street; Kathleen St. Jacques of Nurse Findley Crescent and Radiance Flowers of Pickstock Street.
In addition to the major sponsors there are countless others including major utilities, stores, banks, and organizations and a few individuals and even schools.
Bel-Caribe is planning a nationwide expansion for 2015 to help over 200 families.
