Wednesday, December 24, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Twenty-four year old Rufus Castillo, a messenger who attempted to smuggle 21 grams of cannabis into Belize Central Prison, was fined $500 today by Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser.
Castillo pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled drug.
Castillo was given until February 28, 2015, to pay the fine.
If he defaults on payment he will serve 5 months in jail.
Castillo said that he did not know that cannabis was in the package that his cousin’s girlfriend gave him to take to his cousin who is an inmate at Belize Central Prison.
Senior Magistrate Fraser explained to him that he should have searched the package to know exactly what he was taking to prison and the law deems that he is responsible for what was in the package.
The incident occurred on Tuesday.
A prison officer reported to the police that when he searched a package in a plastic bag that Castillo brought with him, he found the cannabis at the bottom of the deodorant.
