BERMUDIAN LANDING, Belize District. Thursday, January 8, 2015. AARON HUMES Reporting: – The Department of the Environment (DOE) today hosted members of the press in the home of the Community Baboon Sanctuary to push for greater collaboration in the field of environmental reporting.
Acknowledging the limitations of the press in balancing the crime and scandal-heavy nature of TV and radio, consultant and facilitator Daedra Haylock nonetheless said a place should be made for stories that link the use and abuse of natural resources to Belizean lifestyle and culture.
Deputy Chief Environmental Officer Edgar Ek extended the hand of cooperation, promising to make information and personnel available to media houses to cover stories.
Part of the effort includes training front-line persons to be able to build relationships with the press and relaxing the restrictions of the public service regulations that limits public officers’ ability to speak publicly and inhibits communication with the press.
The Department is expected to sign a memorandum of cooperation with media houses present today.
