Wednesday, January 14, 2015. AARON HUMES Reporting: This morning the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the University of Belize signed a tripartite agreement designed to cement a relationship already established with Bridgewater State University of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
Bridgewater State hosts several Belizeans completing Master’s degrees in education in various disciplines and more opportunities will be offered under the terms of the new agreement.
University president Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria and his colleagues have developed long-standing friendships with counterparts in the Ministry and at St. Johns Anglican Primary School, whose Standard I students are soon to receive a new classroom building.
UB, says president Alan Slusher, just established its association with Bridgewater under a Memorandum of Understanding signed one year ago, but it is set to deepen and expand.
Beyond scholarships, Slusher says that UB and Bridgewater, whose student population numbers just over 12,000, are setting the stage for expansion of their cooperative agreement beyond education to cover additional disciplines including social and natural sciences and the arts, focusing on overall university development including accreditation.
Exact details are to be worked out under the terms of the agreement.
The Ministry already manages a program for students of local colleges other than UB to study for Master’s in Education disciplines at Bridgewater State.
According to Minister of Education Patrick Faber, the mutual benefits of the Belize-Bridgewater relationship make it a model for other current and potential partners.
Bridgewater’s president Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria says Bridgewater is committed to making all who come in contact with it able to capitalize on their opportunity for personal development.
St. John’s’ new classroom building is made from pressure-treated wood and is funded by the personal efforts of Dr. Mohler-Faria in honor of his late parents John and Frances.
The building is near completion and was blessed by Bishop Philip Wright of the Anglican Diocese during today’s ceremony.
