Monday, January 26, 2015. BMG: The BSI/ASR sugar factory at Tower Hill cranked up this morning for the much delayed 2015 crop season.
Deliveries began just after ten o’clock this morning when the gates to the factory were opened.
There were smiles all around as the first trailer load of sugar cane rolled in. In the cheering section at the opening of the sugar crop was minister of Agriculture, the Deputy Prime Minister, Gaspar Vega.
The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association, the Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers Association and the Corozal Cane Producers Association will be delivering cane to the factory on a twenty four hour daily scheduled depending on the amount of cane they have.
The Sugar Industry Control Board, under the leadership of Gabriel Martinez, met with the different associations last Friday to work out the schedule.
An estimated 1.45 million tons of sugar cane are in the field and the farmers and BIS/ASR have agreed to work together to harvest as much of that as possible.
Right now, the thinking is that an estimated one million and fifty tons of cane can be harvested between now and July, but that will all depend on the weather.
For the first two days, the factory will aim to accept six thousand tons of cane after which that amount will be increased.
