Court of Appeal acquits policeman of manslaughter

Thursday, March 12, 2015. AARON HUMES Reporting: The Court of Appeal has officially acquitted former police officer Burton Caliz of a charge of manslaughter.

His appeal was allowed, conviction quashed, sentence set aside and charges formally dropped after hearing today.

Initially, Caliz was charged with the murder of 23 year old Leroy Pilgrim, who was shot and killed in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye in February, 2004.

The murder charge was later reduced to manslaughter and Caliz was convicted of manslaughter in January 2007 and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Caliz appealed and he won his appeal and a retrial was ordered.

At the retrial he was convicted of manslaughter and he was ordered to pay a fine of $3,000 by Justice John Gonzalez.

Caliz was not represented by any attorney at today’s appeal hearing. Crown Counsel Linsbert Willis represented the respondent.

The reasons are to be handed down at a later date.
