Monday, March 23, 2015. JUAN CAAL Reporting: Florencio Mes, the last of the Three Kings of authentic cultural Belizean music was given a citation on Sunday, March 22 during the annual Maya Day celebration.
With hundreds of people from all over Belize in attendance, the Tumulkin Center of Learning in Blue Creek village, Toledo, publicly recognized the contributions of Mr. Mes to his culture, particularly in the area of harp making and the playing of harp music.
The soft-spoken Florencio Mes was presented with a plaque and a copy of his biography, read by media personality Patrick E. Jones was presented on stage by representatives of the Institute of Creative Arts.
In an interview after receiving the citation, Mr. Mes said that “culture is the backbone of our society and we are responsible for preserving it with respect and dignity.”
He publicly thanked everyone who was instrumental in making Sunday’s public recognition possible and promised that as long as he can breathe there will be harp music.
