UPDATE: 4:00pm. Aaron Humes Reporting: A female officer of the Belize National Coast Guard is said to be in police custody pending charges after she allegedly shot a colleague with her service revolver while on duty at the Guard’s Headquarters off Mile 4, George Price Highway. 37 year old Petty Officer First Class Kurt Hyde of Ontario, Cayo District, is reported to be undergoing surgery to remove a bullet from his face, which caused injuries to his neck and jaw. The motive behind the shooting is unclear. We understand that the accused shooter was suspected of being mentally unstable but remained on duty after a medical board declared her fit to continue working. The suspected shooter is alleged to have previously pulled her weapon on several fellow officers but not in circumstances that warranted dismissal. Police are investigating.
