Thursday, April 9th 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: It was established last year to promote the gathering and preservation of Belize’s history, and the Belize History Association (BHA) is moving full steam ahead in that goal. BHA FINAL LOGO copy

Today it presented its new logo, the combined creation of the two winners of its logo design competition held earlier this year. From fifty-three presented logos the designs made by first-place winner Joel Cho of San Antonio, Toledo, and runner-up Jeremy Gongora of Yo Creek, Orange Walk, were combined for the final logo.

The new emblem features in the outer layer a magnifying glass overlaid between blue ribbons and the name of the Association below on a maroon circle. In the middle there are the initials of the association in maroon, a gold laid open book to symbolize the open-ended nature of history and the invitation to read, document and investigate Belizean history for ourselves. The map of Belize sits in the middle of the book, colored black to represent a comprehensive approach to writing the history of all of Belize and acknowledging the resilience necessary to overcome the challenges therein. Both Cho and Gongora spoke of their pride in their accomplishments.

Cho received a prize package including a 7.0 Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, wireless HP printer, wireless KlipX headset and selection of books on Belize. Gongora received $250 and selection of books on Belize for second place. Both winners will tour the National Heritage Library and Belize Archives and Records Service in Belmopan.

BHA Chair Francis Humphreys spoke on the role of the BHA in pursuing Belizean history. He said that the Association’s work is one for all Belizeans who are interested in keeping Belize’s history at its forefront.

The Association sponsors the annual National History Lecture Series scheduled for September and also to be held in June and October, and is presently collaborating with the Mexican Intercultural University of Quintana Roo and the University of Belize to obtain papers from Spanish documenting the history of the Battle of St. George’s Caye. Its offices are located in Belmopan at the Secretariat for the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR), a division of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).
