PG Police charge driver for fatal Hit and Run

Thursday, April 16^th, 2015. BMG: In the early hours of Monday morning, Punta Gorda police discovered the semi-nude and lifeless body of 56 year old Jose Morales, a resident of Big Falls village in the Toledo District. Authorities say, Morales was walking on the Southern Highway, between Lindo Hill and Big Falls Village when he was hit by an unknown vehicle and left to die.

Inspector Ernel Dominguez of the Punta Gorda Police Formation revealed that Morales was a Guatemalan National residing in the village at the time and that the intense investigation by the police lead to the arrest of the culpable driver.

He has since been identified as 41 year old, Belizean contractor, John Baptist who also resides in Big Falls Village. Baptist was charged on Tuesday April 14 for 7 traffic offenses including; driving without due care and attention, manslaughter by negligence, driving without a valid driver’s license, failure to stop and render aid, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and causing death by careless conduct.

Baptist was taken before the Magistrate on Wednesday April, 15th where he was offered bail. He could not meet bail and so remains in the custody of police. Inspector Dominguez said that many of the charges being faced by Baptist are grounds for the case to be tried in the Supreme Court.
