Friday, April 24th, 2015. BMG: Police have made an arrest in the massive theft of what amounts to just under $500,000 so far from the Government Treasury and the fingered man is 28 year old David Enriquez, a clerk with the Department.
Today he was read charges of three counts of theft before Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith, who did not take a plea as the offences alleged will be tried on indictment.
Enriquez, represented by Oscar Selgado, was denied bail and remanded into custody until June 4. Enriquez is accused of unlawfully diverting three separate sums of money intended as monthly subventions for the Toledo Community College (TCC) located on the San Antonio Road. On January 12, 2015, some $47,638 was diverted to an account at the Belize Bank branch in Dangriga, Stann Creek District.
It happened again two weeks later on January 28, this time for a value of $225, 296. The third count allegedly took place on March 14, 2014, for the same amount as the second count – $225,296. In all cases the monies were withdrawn personally by Enriquez from the Belize Bank account.
