Thursday, April 30th, 2015. BMG: Belize has the highest internet rates as well as the slowest bandwidth in all of the CARICOM countries. And in that vein, on April 16th 2015 at the University of Belize campus, Internet service provider representative Rafael Marin, along with internet providers from all over the country, signed the agreement for Belize’s internet exchange point (BIX).
It was a historic day as the country’s internet providers have committed to setting up Belize’s first-ever internet exchange point (IXP), which means faster, more reliable internet countrywide.
The initiative came to fruition when all nine internet providers joined hands for a greater good. One speaker at the signing said, “A local IXP improves the quality and cost effectiveness of delivering local Internet-enabled services to citizens and businesses.
That’s a major benefit for local ISPs. The IXP also enables new forms of local innovation and entrepreneurship, as Internet users benefit from greater opportunities for e-commerce and local content development, including online education.” When this new IXP is established, it will mean more bandwidth, faster internet and cheaper prices for all Belizean internet consumers.
