Former Mayor of Belize City in apparent suicide

Posted: Thursday, April 30, 2015. 7:59 pm CST.

Thursday, April 30th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: This afternoon around two the Fonseca family was rocked by news of the death of William Henry “David” Fonseca, a businessman and former three-term Mayor of Belize City from 1996 to 2006.

Fonseca is believed to have shot himself at the family residence in Stewart’s Alley although no official report has been released by police. Family members and friends were at the residence, none of whom spoke to the press. Police Superintendent Hilberto Romero and pathologist Dr. Mario Estradabran were also present to begin formal examination of the scene and of Fonseca’s body. DAvid Fonseca

It seems as if though the family had made plans to have a preacher visit the scene and say a few prayers.  That was at 4:40 p.m. and Fonseca’s body was still in the house.  It is not clear what medical or other condition may have led to Fonseca’s fatal decision.

Friends and colleagues of Fonseca shared their sad thoughts via Facebook within hours of Fonseca’s passing. Former City Councilor and current standard bearer for Collet, Yasmin Shoman wrote, “It is with greatest sadness and a heavy heart that I have learned of the passing of my dear friend and former colleague, David Fonseca. Dave was one of the kindest, most compassionate people I have ever known.

He was an outstanding Mayor, devoted to serving residents and always generously supported humanitarian causes. Dave had a heart of gold. He was always gentle and respectful…a true gentleman. My deepest condolences to his family. May God grant them strength and courage during this painful time. I will miss you, my dear friend. May you Rest in Peace, “Mayor.” You are gone but will never be forgotten.”

Former PUP leader and parliamentarian John Briceño wrote: “Our hearts go out to the Fonsecas on the loss of David, to his children, to Ralph and the rest of the family. Mayor David Fonseca dedicated decades of his life to the service of Belizeans and for this we say thank you.  David entered politics in the 90’s at the local level. He was the first to be directly elected as mayor and served until he retired from active politics in 2006.  Belize lost a good man and our People’s United Party a good leader.  May he find rest now.”

David Fonseca is survived by extended family including older brother and former Minister Ralph Fonseca and first cousin and current PUP leader Francis Fonseca. May he rest in peace.
