Monday, May 11th, 2015. Chrisbert Garcia Reporting: Each school competes in an annual religious competition called the “Christian Spirit Award” where teams of three students from every school battle against each other in Jeopardy like game setting.
Earlier today, the eliminations for Punta Gorda Town took place at the St. Benedict School church with St. Benedict R.C School, St. Peter R.C School and Little Flower R.C School duking it out to represent the town amongst the other qualifiers in the district.
The competition consisted of 4 rounds where contestants select a religious category and an amount of points, the higher the amount of points, the harder the questions are, but it seemed like these students studied hard because for the entire first half of the competition, only 2 questions were answered incorrectly.
The organizer of the competition, a Peace Corp Volunteer, Mr. Patrick Decker said that this is the 3rd annual Christian Spirit Award Competition and its purpose is to motivate students to be more religious and take their religion class at school more seriously.
It seems to be working because the students were excited and competitive, each school cheering on their team. The organizers say this initiative is an excellent idea that could be taken and used all across Belize, not only for Catholic Schools but for all primary and secondary schools.
