Belizean Kara Nisbet graduates from Duke Law School
Thursday, May 21st, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: For many years the most famous Belizean at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, United States of America, was professor of physics and mathematics Dr. Arlie Petters.
A 27 year old working in a different field now hopes to emulate his achievements and blaze her own trail. Kara Nisbet, daughter of Derek Nisbet and Mrs. Isabel Arriaga of Belize City, and step-daughter of Dr. Pedro Arriaga, last week graduated from the Duke School of Law with a Masters’ in Law (LL.M.), concentrating in banking and finance law.
She spoke to us via telephone from Durham this afternoon. According to Kara her 110 classmates included several judges, prosecutors and established attorneys from 40 countries, as far east as Japan.
The U.S. News and World Report‘s annual education survey ranks Duke as the 8th best law school in the United States, with President Richard Nixon as a notable alumni.
Kara says she selected it because of its prestige and close-knit nature, a small program with closer access to lecturers. As for future plans, there is no rest for Kara; she is presently studying for the New York State bar examination to take place in July, and will start looking for work there thereafter.
