Friday, May 22nd 2015. BMG: The Department of Youth Services in Punta Gorda in collaboration with the PG Town Council and Plenty Belize, held a Youth Governance Forum on Wednesday in which youths from various schools in PG participated.
The event was held at the Town Council’s Conference room which was packed to capacity with young minds, ready to do their part in molding the town with the relatively new UDP council.
The forum was a part of DYS’ Toledo Youth Empowerment project that has three main objectives:
To educate the youths on the role and responsibilities of the town council.
Share with the youths their role in society and the importance of volunteerism.
Increase the youths’ participation in the decision making of the town council.
Various presenters addressed the participants including Mayor Fern Guttierez, Deputy Mayor Franklin ‘Kranka’ Polonio and members of the community from the public and private sectors.
A resounding message of bettering the small Town of Punta Gorda was uttered and as the town takes bigger strides to completing the ‘Child Friendly’ process requirements, forums like these are a healthy way to engage and empower the youths.
