Travel bloggers write about corruption in Belize

Posted: Tuesday, May 26, 2015. 11:22 am CST.

Tuesday, May 26th 2015. BMG: A family who visited Belize in 2012 wrote an interesting article entitled “Negotiating our way out of corrupt Belize” that has gone viral on social media.

The family operates the travel blog http://www.akingslife.com and describe themselves as follows: “We are a digital nomad family of four (with a 5 & 3 yr old) that sold our suburban stuff in order to live our dreams of travel, adventure and new experiences in different cultures. We hope you enjoy our stories and that you are inspired to simplify and live out your own dreams.”IMG_2096

Even though the article was published three years ago, it is the first time that BMG is seeing it and is gaining a lot of attention on social media.

“Everything in Belize has a price that can be paid as a bribe to the appropriate government official. Want residency quick? A $15,000-$30,000 payment will do the trick. Need a permit for a vehicle on the island? $3,000 and it’s done. And on, and on. This is open knowledge, this isn’t even a secret! What a shame, I say,” wrote the bloggers who questioned why Belize has to be so corrupt.

“During our 6 month stay we had the opportunity to witness a full election process. There was a lot of yelling and screaming and riling up of citizens for particular political parties, that is just the norm everywhere. But what we witnessed on election day was insidious. Voters being paid directly by political parties $100 bz for their vote, a gentleman that was paid $400 bz to fly from Placencia to San Pedro by a political party to cast his vote for that party and on and on. When stories of vote tampering came on the news, there was no surprise,” lament the bloggers.

The family goes on to say that Belize is so beautiful from the outside but ugly and decaying from the inside and if government does not provide citizens with a positive example, the country will be doomed to being rats grappling at each other for the left overs.

The bloggers end the article with a quote from a local fisherman who said ““I love my people, I detest the government”.
