Wednesday, May 27th, 2015. BMG: Belize’s quest for World Cup qualification continues against the Dominican Republic after a nail-biting finish in the Cayman Islands, where veteran mid-fielder Elroy Kuylen scored a free kick in the final minutes of the game and allowed the Jaguars to advance.
Our best striker and arguably the best ever Belizean football player, Deon McCaulay, who scored 11 goals in the 2014 qualifier, more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to top the global strikers’ table, was not called for the games against Cayman and his replacements got jittery, missing the chances at goal.
When asked about playing without McCaulay, Kuylen said: “Oh man did we miss Deon, if we get him through five times, you know he’ll score at least two, that’s a guarantee. You can’t teach that kind of composure.”
Fortunately our team won’t be facing Dominican Republic without McCaulay, as he has been practicing with the team for the past month after his flight to Belize was paid for by loyal Jaguar fans.
Belizean football has always been considered inferior to our Central American neighbors like Panama and Costa Rica but the 2013 appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the recent win against Cayman has shown that the Jaguars are much improved and cannot be taken lightly, especially with striker Deon McCaulay on the pitch, always ready to shake the back of the net.
When asked about the upcoming game against Dominica, Kuylen said: “History motivates us right now, history lasts forever you know and we want to make it. We want to open doors for the young boys coming behind; it’s our time now in Belize.
He also added that the team is working on their system for the Dominican series, a system which includes star striker Deon McCaulay and is expected to bring triumph in the upcoming round of the 2018 Russia World Cup Qualifiers.
