PUP’s breakdown has PM Barrow thinking about calling early elections

Posted: Tuesday, June 9, 2015. 10:01 am CST.

Tuesday, June 9th 2015. Chrisbert Garcia Reporting: Party politics action has been at an extreme high over the past few weeks and as the People’s United Party continues to disintegrate, Prime Minister Barrow and the United Democratic Party are seeing an opportunity to creep in and steal an easy general election victory.

As the governing party, the UDP can decide to call the elections at any point in time and with the blue party’s members resigning left and right, Ivan Ramos being the latest one to announce his retirement, PM Barrow can smell in the air, an embarrassing defeat for the PUP in the upcoming general elections. dean barrow (leader, united democratic party use for santi story only)

Since Dangriga Area Representative Ivan Ramos has officially announced his stepping down, a bi-election had to be called so as to put someone in the position that he is leaving vacant and for the second time this year, the UDP has a chance to take over a seat from the opposition.

In January of this year, a seat in Cayo North was won by a huge margin in a bi-election held after another PUP representative had stepped down and our PM seems confident that the seat in Dangriga will be won by the men in red as well.

In an address to his party supporters on Sunday, June7th 2015, PM Barrow lashed out on the opposition and its leader, saying: “Tomorrow we will formally give you the timeline for the next bi-election in the constituency of Dangriga when the United Democratic Party will blow away the new candidate of the PUP and cement this stronghold almost that we are developing electorally in terms of the politics of this country. That will strike another blow; put an exclamation point behind this unstoppable UDP march to its 3rd term. So in a sense that announcement by the Honorable Ramos and of course we have already gotten hold of a message that Francis Fonseca has sent out to his standard bearers, they accuse Ivan of all kinds of things. That’s why the man had to resign you know. I don’t understand the People’s United Party. You see how I tell you Darrell, even as he contemplates going to Belmopan, is still looking after the residence of Belize City and looking after those that are in the council’s employed. We in the UDP look after our people. The PUP pushed out this man, then turn around when the man got support for his people still from Petrocaribe and the Julius Espat get up there and bad talk the man and he want to discipline the man like the man is his child. They don’t know how to treat their own people. If they don’t have any heart for those that represent them, those that are their candidates, how the hell they will have any heart for the general people of this country? But Francis is about telling the rest of them now that it is greed and selfishness on Ivan’s part that has caused him to resign. Ivan need to tell them ‘don’t watch me, watch yourself Francis.’ You talk about the fact that you are so incompetent and inept, you are so absolutely impotent as a leader, you are so destructive, you are so hopeless that you Francis Fonseca as leader is causing the People’s United Party to disintegrate – to break up.”
