Monday, June 15th 2015. BMG: The 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification process is currently underway and while the host team Russia has automatically advanced to play, 31 of 32 teams are battling out to make the cut.
All 208 remaining FIFA member associations are eligible to enter the qualifying process and for the first time in World Cup history, all national teams registered for the preliminary competition. Even more surprising than the registration rate for the qualifiers, is the fact that our very own Deon McCaulay is the leading goal scorer, not only in CONCACAF, but in all confederations.
With 2 away goals in the first game against the Dominican Republic and another net shaking header in the late minutes of Sunday’s game in Belmopan, McCaulay’s 3 goals in only two games has him shining under the international spotlight once again.
McCaulay is leading the top 6 players that have scored three goals in the qualifiers. Deon is ranked number one after playing two total games, compared to the other players who scored their 3 goals in four games. Nahki Wells of Bermuda and Sunil Chhetri of India follow Deon in second and third place on the scoring chart respectively.
Judging from the way our football hero is playing right now, it does not look like he will be moving from that first place spot anytime soon.
Three cheers for Deon and the up and coming Belize Jaguars team!
