Tuesday, June 16th, 2015. BMG: “How is it that a Guatemalan naval vessel could enter and traverse Belize’s territorial waters unannounced and undetected by Belize’s national security apparatus?”
This official release sent by the PUP yesterday is just one of the many questions left unanswered, days after a Guatemalan vessel has been removed from Belize’s Barrier Reef. Commander Bennett of the Belize Coast Guard reported that it took about 10 minutes to tug the vessel off, and by 11:40 a.m. on Saturday morning, the vessel was transported well off site.
However, Belizeans are still awaiting an official report from the Department of Environment as to the damages incurred by the vessel. The intrusion of a Guatemalan vessel so close to our shores is one of grave concern, says the PUP, especially in light of the recent detection of illegal Guatemalans in the west and south of Belize.
The opposition is looking for answers; demanding that charges be laid out for the intrusion on our waters and breach of the Harbours and Merchant Shipping Act as well as the Environmental protection Act.
The end of the PUP’s release states “The People’s United Party further asserts that the presence of a Guatemalan naval vessel in our territorial waters, shortly after the unlawful detention of Belizean citizens in Guatemala and the Sarstoon Island incursion, is yet another failure on the part of the Barrow administration to protect and defend Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
