Guatemala trying to stop construction of forward operating base at Sarstoon Island
Thursday, July 16th, 2015. BMG: Guatemalan authorities remain peeved after their encounter with Belizean Coast Guard personnel in the vicinity of Sarstoon Island, where the Belizeans had gone to scout the location for the construction of a forward operating base to help with Belize’s law and order.
National Security CEO George Lovell told Channel 5 that the matter will be discussed, as the Guatemalans want the base stopped until the claim is resolved.
However, the island is Belizean territory and Lovell says Belize does not need permission from Guatemala or anyone else to construct the base in support of its national security objectives.
