Friday, July 31st, 2015. BMG: His youthful face belies the decade and a half he has spent in politics; but Collet representative, Minister of Education and former chairman of the United Democratic Party, believes he can be Prime Minister of Belize – someday.
Current Prime Minister and UDP leader Dean Barrow has led the UDP since 1998 and been Prime Minister since 2008 – both records for the UDP, the latter tied with Sir Manuel Esquivel.
If he wins a third term – something he committed to at the last UDP national convention in Corozal in February of 2013 – it will be his last, according to a Constitutional amendment passed a few years ago.
Faber admits he has eyes on the prize but he is not thinking about that now. He told News 5 this week that he and others have ambitions to succeed Barrow but says his youth and age lead him to wait and dedicate his time to serving the people of Collet and all Belizeans through the Ministry of Education; he will bide his time until that leadership race comes and says his track record will help him along.
No Prime Minister has come from outside Belize City; there have been two non-Old Capital leaders of the Opposition, Ted Aranda for the UDP and John Briceno for the PUP, both of whom lost party leadership before getting the chance to lead their parties to a general election.
