Chair of the Committee of Management, Ezekiel Cansino says that while they see the non-compliances as minor, they have sent a resolution for corrective measures.
Some of the non-compliances include: the Associations inability to explain to farmers the production flow, and Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) needs to ensure that the safety kits are made available to farmers along with appropriate training in how to use the first aid kits.
The auditors also found that the water available at the fields and consumed by workers may not be appropriate. Other areas the BSCFA group needs help in is providing training to farmers on the handling of chemicals.
Cansino says that they have provided the training before but some farmers may not have received it and as a result will need to repeat the sessions.
Cansino ended saying that Fairtrade has accepted there measures and have given the Association until November 25th, 2015 to show evidence that the standards are being compiled with.
Presently, the non-compliances are not affecting the Association’s certification.
