Sugar farmers are told to prepare for lower prices

BMG: It is being predicted that sugar prices will fall in 2016, which will have a huge impact on the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and other organizations if it does indeed happen. So how will the BSCFA and all sugar cane farmers cope with this reduction in sugar prices after their record breaking year of production?

Ezequiel Cansino, the Chairman of BSCFA, spoke to the media yesterday, saying that the only thing caneros can do is keep the quality of their cane high, try their best to lower production costs and implement practices to increase the yields per acre, since everyone is predicting that there will be a huge reduction in sugar prices.

Cansino said it is his hope that by keeping the good harvest practices and the cane quality high, caneros will be able to mitigate the reduction of sugar prices for at least a few years.
