Caribbean Shores businesses “targeted” by Mayor?

Friday, August 21, 2015. BMG: Mayor of Belize City Darrell Bradley wants to reduce trade license fees by 50% for all businesses in Belize City as a part of a plan to overhaul the entire tax system and make doing business here better.

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already called for a structured system for businesses to pay their taxes.darrell-bradley

But Bradley’s political opponent in Caribbean Shores, Kareem Musa, claims that uneven assessments are the real problem and as a result, the division is paying at least 50% of all taxes in the City and more than the others combined – which Musa characterizes as paying the City’s debts such as the municipal bond and borrowed Petrocaribe monies.

Musa accuses Bradley of unilaterally raising taxes and says he should roll back the figures to three years ago and remove the “illegal burden” of being denied other services by City Hall until the taxes are paid.

Musa further questions the Mayor’s seriousness about this plan after “punishing” the division he now wishes to contest. With general elections to be called sooner rather than later, Musa says he can get himself out of the pickle he is in by rebating the monies to businesses in the area.

The Mayor has deferred comment until he can establish through research where Caribbean Shores stands in terms of payments.
