BEL revises proposal for union agreement

Friday, August 28, 2015. BMG: Management of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has revised again its initial proposal to settle the labour dispute with the Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) over staff benefits. 

Minister of Labour Godwin Hulse and Labour Commissioner Ivan Williams are overseeing the process.

The state-run power company says it is willing to compromise on the following: the total increase in salaries and benefits; the vesting period for employee pension; and adjustment to the annual Performance Increase Matrix.

While the union says it is principally asking for an across the board 8% increase, the Company’s maintains that its initial proposal was for an increase in salaries and benefits that is equivalent to a 24% increase in salary.
