Friday, August 28, 2015. Orange Walk Bureau reporting: Thanks to funding being made available by the European Union, cane farmers will be benefitting from loans to be used primarily for replanting of their crop and Raton maintenance.
According to Marcos Osorio, Director of the Sugar Industry Research Development Institute (SIRDI), if the monies which are in the millions are not used by a specified period of time, the funds will go back to the European Union and it will be a loss for the sugar industry.
Osorio added that the funds are available for different field activities, and at the end of the day, the overall objective is for cane farmers to be able to produce more tons of cane per acre.
A team from SIRDI has been travelling and visiting with farmers from Corozal, Orange Walk, Trinidad and San Narciso.
