Tuesday, September 15th, 2015. BMG: In a statement released from Washington, United States today, it shows that Belize has fallen onto an undesirable list of Caribbean Countries that the US is watching closely.
The 2015 list of major illicit drug producing countries or drug transit countries that “significantly affect the United States”, has been released and shared with the US Congress by President Barack Obama, consisting of 22 nations.
Those nations are: Belize, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Panama, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan and Peru.
Fortunately for Belize, Obama determined that only Bolivia, Burma and Venezuela “failed demonstrably” to make sufficient efforts to adhere to their obligations under international counter narcotics agreements, which is punishable by sanctioning imposed by the President.
Although Belize is on the list, it does not necessarily reflect our counter narcotics efforts or level of cooperation with the US and can simply be a reflection of geographic, commercial and economic factors that allow drugs to be trafficked through or produced in our country.
