Sunday, September 27th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: Guatemala’s internal anti-corruption agency, CICIG, has been responsible for the uncovering of the La Linea scandal which toppled sitting president Otto Perez Molina, ex-vice president Roxanna Baldetti, and countless others for reported involvement in Customs fraud.
That organization is run by the United Nations, but there are now reports that the regional Organization of American States (OAS) is moving to propose a similar organization to work in Honduras.
On Monday, the OAS is expected to announce that it will present to embattled Honduras president Juan Orlando Hernandez a proposal to combat corruption and immunity in Honduras, which has seen widespread protests similar to Guatemala’s in the months before Perez Molina’s resignation earlier this month and subsequent arrest and imprisonment.
The OAS says the proposal is the result of numerous meetings held by an OAS team in recent months in Honduras upon a request from President Hernandez to them.
President Hernandez, who took office last January, has repeatedly defied calls to resign.
