Monday, October 5, 2015. BMG: A family from Independence, Stann Creek District, needs your help to locate a missing teenager. 13 year old Katia Mejia was last seen heading to Independence High School to begin classes on Thursday. But according to her older sister, Leidy, she never showed up.
Leidy spoke to us this morning via telephone and said that some persons have said they saw her sister in Belize City at the bus terminal with her mother and grandmother. Her father found she was missing from school when he went to pick her up in the evening.
Katia’s parents, both originally from Honduras, were married for 11 years but separated four years ago. Katia’s father and legal guardian, Santos Danilo Castro, is a naturalized Belizean and Katia was born here.
Based on information they have received, according to Leidy is that the mother could be using her child to gain a new life in the United States – adults travelling with minors are allowed to wait out their time until they can get proper documentation. But their concern is that Katia could be in danger.
Leidy says the family love and miss Katia and want her to come home. The matter has been reported to police in the Independence area.
Katia Mejia was last seen in her Independence High School uniform, brown skirt and white blouse with yellow epaulettes.
She has light brown eyes, light skin, and stands about 5 feet 3 inches tall.
Anyone with information is asked to kindly contact the nearest police station or her father Santos Castro, at 625-9466.
