Chrisbert Garcia Reporting: The Department of Youth Services’ (DYS) annual Youth Week, coordinated with assistance from local stakeholders in each district, will begin on Sunday November 29th, featuring all day activities for young people all across the country.DYS youth week

In the Toledo District, Sunday will kick off the jam packed week of fun activities at Machaca Outreach Center, which is located just a few miles outside of Punta Gorda (PG) Town and is a church based institution.

Buses will leave PG at 9:00 and 9:30 Sunday morning to take interested youth up to Machaca where the grand opening will take place in the form of an Ecumenical Church Service, followed by a free lunch and then a fun day will ensue.

The church service will be led by youth and end with an illusion show, while the fun day activities will be done in teams of six, who will compete in various sports and games to win a cash prize of $300 for first place, $200 for second place or $100 for third place.

On Monday, DYS staff and local youth will meet to plan and coordinate for upcoming activities such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection (AIDS) fair at the PG Central Park on Tuesday, in which the department will have a booth, as well as games to attract and inform youth.

Wednesday, the fun continues with a local red carpet event, where outstanding youth from PG and surrounding communities, who were nominated and filled out application forms, will have the opportunity to be selected for a “Youth Award” in various categories, such as: Media, Sports, Leadership, etc.

Thursday will be more relaxed with a movie evening and healthy discussion about love and relationships with the youth, which will be facilitated by local nurse, Marcy Martinez from the PG Hospital.

Then on Friday, a group of youth, accompanied by DYS personnel, will travel to Belize City and take part in the Annual National Youth Awards, held last year at the Princess Ramada Hotel and this year at the Belize Biltmore Plaza.

Finally, youth week comes to an end on Saturday with basketball and football games in Dangriga, for which, teams from PG will travel up to that municipality and compete.

The Department of Youth Services in Toledo and by extension, countrywide, continues to work diligently towards the development and education of youth and the Belize Media Group wishes them a successful Youth Week 2015.
