Reports say Guatemalan President-Elect to arrive in Belize

Posted: Friday, November 27, 2015. 11:27 am CST.

Friday, November 27, 2015.  BMG: Unconfirmed reports from credible sources reaching BMG newsroom is that newly Guatemalan President-Elect Jimmy Morales will be arriving at Belize’s Northern Border sometime around 8:00 p.m. today. Jimmy

Morales will reportedly be escorted from the Northern border to Belize City at the Radisson Fort George Hotel where he will spend the night and meet with Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

If the reports are true, it is peculiar that there were no announcements made regarding Morales’ visit. Also peculiar is that Morales would enter the country by road through the northern border and escorted to a hotel rather than the usual formal pomp and circumstance involved in diplomatic visits.

Perhaps Morales intends to avoid any such formality since he was publicly stated on numerous occasions he does not acknowledge Belize’s sovereignty as an Independent nation.

He, of course, infamously said as part of his campaign that he would ensure that Guatemala reclaimed Belize as part of its rightful territory; a claim which Barrow took a hardline against saying that kind of talk wasn’t good for peaceful diplomatic relations.

Morales was recently on a regional tour meeting with leaders of several Central American nation and it was reported that only Belize was excluded from his list of stops.

We will keep following this story and report when more information is available.
